Volkswagen EA-272 - Passat B1 Predecessor

In the early 1970's, Volkswagen was evaluating a replacement for the Type 3. The resulting design study was designated the EA 272. A handsome front-wheel drive design by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Dimensions were similar to the Type 3, however, a transverse-mounted engine provided additional interior room. The EA 272 served as a stepping stone toward the B1 Passat. The styling cues of which are clearly evident in this design. In the end, Volkswagen decided to base the Passat on the then new Audi 80 and the lines were adapted to that platform to create the shape now so familiar to B1 fans today.

Origins of the Passat B1 lines are clearly evident in this side profile.

Handsome front styling did not make it into production.

Dashboard design has passing resemblance to the design used in the early 80's

The lines of the trunk lid are very similar to the final production Passat.

Rear profile styling is a bit flatter than the final design but the resemblance is there.
